Is this a new trend in using furigana?

I've seen this in printed dictionaries and don't think it's a recent trend at all. It keeps the line spacing even (and tight) and thus saves space (important for dictionaries).

It seems like it can function in Chinese as is: What's the difference between [大衣]{dàyī}, [外套]{wàitào}, and [外衣]{wàiyī} - which can all be translated to “coat”? It would be nice to have at Chinese....
